Step back in time to the era of steam with the Adams Radial Locomotive, a captivating piece of railway history brought to life in exquisite detail for model railway enthusiasts. Designed by the visionary William Adams in 1882, these locomotives were a testament to the innovation and engineering prowess of the time. Based on the popular 4-4-0 tank engine design, the Adams Radial Locomotive boasted a distinctive feature: an enlarged coal bunker that necessitated the addition of a trailing axle for enhanced support and performance.

Between 1882 and 1885, a total of 71 of these remarkable locomotives were meticulously crafted, and they became a familiar sight on the railway tracks of their era. These locomotives served dutifully, showcasing their reliability and versatility in various railway applications. However, like all great chapters in railway history, their operational lives eventually came to an end, with the process of withdrawal commencing in 1916.

Despite the passage of time and the retirement of these locomotives from active service, the legacy of the Adams Radial Locomotive lives on. Today, railway enthusiasts and history buffs can rejoice in the preservation of one remarkable example. Number 488 stands as a living testament to this iconic locomotive's enduring charm, proudly on display at the Bluebell Railway, where it continues to captivate visitors and evoke a sense of nostalgia for the golden age of steam.
