E1/J72 HISTORY:

The J72 Class steam locomotive holds a unique place in history, having been constructed by three different railway companies over 53 years: the North Eastern Railway (NER), the London North Eastern Railway (LNER), and British Railways (BR).

Originally designed by Wilson Worsdell as Class E1 for the NER in 1898, the J72 was intended for light goods and shunting duties. Over the years, it underwent modifications and improvements, passing from NER to LNER ownership in 1924. Even after nationalisation, BR continued to build these locomotives, totaling 113 J72s, with the last one completed nearly five decades after the first.

Initially designed for shunting and light goods, some J72s were equipped with vacuum brakes during the 1940s, allowing them to serve as station pilots and on carriage shunting duties. Although withdrawals began in 1958, a few found new life in departmental stock for de-icing duties.

One notable survivor, No. 69023, was preserved and lovingly restored by Mr. R. Ainsworth, who named it "Joem" in honour of his parents. Today, it's a cherished member of the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group, delighting enthusiasts at the Wensleydale Railway in its striking BR "Station Pilot" livery.

Don't miss out on the chance to own this remarkable Bachmann Branchline LNER J72 Class locomotive in NER Lined Green livery with SOUND FITTED.
