Mainline Hunslet History:

These locomotives were iconic on North Wales' narrow gauge railways, especially the Penrhyn Quarry Railway. The first Mainline Hunslet, 'Charles,' was built in 1882, followed by 'Linda' and 'Blanche' in 1893. Known as 'the Ladies,' they shared a 0-4-0 saddle tank design with 'Charles,' albeit with some differences. These locomotives served at Penrhyn Quarry, which was the world's largest slate quarry during the late nineteenth century.

Throughout their careers, these locomotives underwent several improvements, including full-height rear cab sheets, welded tanks replacing riveted versions, and various sandbox arrangements. By 1962, the Penrhyn Quarry Railway ceased operations. 'Charles' had retired in the mid-1950s, while 'Linda' and 'Blanche' continued until the end.

After the railway's closure, 'Linda' found a new home at the Ffestiniog Railway in 1963, with 'Blanche' following in December of the same year. Both were modified, becoming 2-4-0ST+Ts with the addition of front pony wheels and tenders. As we celebrate 60 years since their acquisition by the Ffestiniog Railway in 2023, 'Linda' and 'Blanche' remain essential and beloved members of the railway's fleet, cherished by visitors, staff, and volunteers.

'Charles,' with a condemned boiler, was loaned to the National Trust and is now a prized exhibit at Penrhyn Castle, once owned by the Penrhyn Quarry's proprietors.
