Mechanism and Detailing:

The Bachmann Narrow Gauge Double Fairlie locomotive boasts an impressive level of detail. The tooling has been expertly designed to capture the variations and nuances seen on the real locomotives, resulting in a model that faithfully replicates the prototype. The precision-moulded bodies are adorned with numerous finely crafted components, including authentic brass handrails and metal tank filler cap rings. Notable parts such as the steam fountain, cab controls, and tallow cups have been meticulously recreated.

Underneath its pristine exterior, the mechanism of this locomotive is equally impressive. It features a twin shaft coreless motor, equipped with twin flywheels to drive both bogies. The locomotive ensures smooth operation with all-wheel electrical pickup and separate metal bearings on each axle. For those looking to integrate this model into a DCC system, it comes with a Next18 DCC decoder socket, easily accessible through a removable panel on the underside. Additionally, pre-fitted speakers come standard on all versions, and for the ultimate experience, you can opt for a SOUND FITTED model to bring your layout to life with realistic sound effects.

Livery and Authenticity:

The Bachmann Narrow Gauge model is a masterpiece of authenticity, featuring exquisite livery application that combines Ffestiniog Railway-specified colours with authentic lining, crests, and plates. The attention to detail extends to every aspect of the model, ensuring that it captures the essence of the iconic Double Fairlie locomotive.

Double Fairlie History:

The iconic Double Fairlie locomotive design, conceived by Scottish engineer Robert F. Fairlie and patented in 1864, revolutionised the world of steam locomotion. This innovative design featured a single boiler mounted above a pair of independently controlled pivoting power bogies. This unique design allowed for a large, versatile locomotive that operated effectively in both forward and reverse, navigated sharp curves, and maximised traction by utilising its entire weight.

The Ffestiniog Railway's first Double Fairlie, 'Little Wonder,' was completed in 1869 by George England & Co. of London. It was essentially a pair of 0-4-0 Ffestiniog 'England' chassis beneath a combined boiler. 'Little Wonder' garnered global attention during trials on the Ffestiniog Railway, showcasing the potential of steam-powered narrow gauge railways.

In recognition of the locomotive's impact, Fairlie granted the Ffestiniog Railway unrestricted use of his patented design. 'James Spooner ', a second Double Fairlie locomotive, was commissioned and completed by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol in 1872.

The Ffestiniog Railway constructed its first in-house Double Fairlie, 'Merddin Emrys,' in 1879. This locomotive embodied the distinctive features associated with the Double Fairlie and became an emblem of the Ffestiniog Railway.

'Livingston Thompson' emerged from Boston Lodge in 1886, followed by a 93-year gap until 'Earl of Merioneth' was built in 1979. Due to budget constraints, 'Earl of Merioneth' sported a somewhat simplified appearance and earned the nickname 'The Square' among enthusiasts.
